Residents of Old Wyomissing Road in 18th Ward Express Concerns Over Parking Changes for Pickleball Courts

The recent parking adjustments made to accommodate pickleball players in Reading, Pa. have sparked controversy among residents in the 18th Ward section of the city. The changes, which include switching from curbside to head-on parking with angled lines, have caused a variety of issues for those living in the area.

Residents of Old Wyomissing Road have expressed concerns about the narrow lanes created by the new parking configuration, forcing trucks to drive down the middle of the road. Additionally, motorists now have to make U-turns to enter the angled parking spaces, leading to further frustration.

At a recent city council meeting, resident Atiba Bass criticized the city civil engineering department for not conducting a traffic study before implementing the changes. Bass highlighted the impact on property values, safety, and overall aesthetics of the neighborhood, calling the situation “urban blight.”

Neil Kloiber, another resident, pointed out that the historic nature of the area has been compromised by the added parking, which has reduced green space and made the area less attractive. Residents feel that they were not given a voice in the planning process and are questioning the fairness of the situation.

While some residents have noted the convenience of the new parking for pickleball players, others have raised valid concerns about the negative effects on the community. City officials have stated that the borough of West Reading conducted a traffic study before making the parking changes, but residents remain unsatisfied with the outcome.

Reading City Council members, including Jaime Baez Jr. and Donna Reed, have assured residents that they are taking their concerns seriously and are working to find a solution. A meeting is being planned on site with members of the West Reading Borough Council to address the issue and potentially reconsider the parking configuration.

It is clear that the parking adjustments in Reading have sparked a heated debate among residents, highlighting the importance of community input and collaboration in decision-making processes. As the situation continues to unfold, it will be crucial for city officials to listen to the concerns of residents and work towards a resolution that benefits the entire community.
