Third Annual Pickleball Open Draws Over 100 Players to Boulevard Lake Courts

The third annual Pickleball Open in Thunder Bay is in full swing, with more than 100 players participating in the tournament at the Boulevard Lake courts. The event, organized by the Thunder Bay Pickleball Club, has seen a significant increase in participation over the past three years, showcasing the growing popularity of the sport among people of all ages.

According to Jason Horychuk, head coach of the Thunder Bay Pickleball Club, the tournament has attracted players not only from the local club but also from the Northwestern Ontario region, including city and national champions. The competition kicked off with men’s and women’s doubles play on Friday and will continue with mixed play on Saturday, culminating in singles matches on Sunday. Winners will be awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals at the end of the tournament.

Pickleball, known for its social nature and accessibility, has been gaining traction across the country, with Thunder Bay being no exception. Horychuk emphasized the sport’s appeal, highlighting its smaller court size and fast-paced gameplay that allows players to hit more balls per minute. From eight-year-olds to 80-year-olds, pickleball welcomes players of all ages and skill levels, making it a truly inclusive sport.

One player, Ben Date, shared his experience of discovering pickleball and quickly falling in love with the game. Despite being new to the sport, Date expressed his excitement for participating in his first tournament and praised the welcoming community of players. He encouraged anyone interested in trying out pickleball to give it a shot, noting its fun and engaging nature as well as the health benefits it offers.

For those who want to witness the action firsthand, spectators are welcome to attend the tournament and cheer on the players. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Moose Hall on Fort William Road. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious newcomer, the Pickleball Open promises a weekend of exciting matches and camaraderie on the courts.
