The Rise of Pickleball at Baylor University: A Game Changer for Students

Pickleball, a sport that originated in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Wash., has taken Baylor University by storm. With its simple rules and sense of community, pickleball has quickly become a favorite among students and staff on campus. Tyler junior Austin Emery, the vice president of the Baylor Pickleball Club, attributes the sport’s popularity to its accessibility and the eagerness of the Baylor community to try something new.

Despite the limited number of courts on campus, the Baylor Pickleball Club has managed to attract around 70 official members. However, the lack of courts has hindered the club’s ability to host larger tournaments and involve the local Waco community in the game. Fortunately, Baylor is in the process of expanding its pickleball facilities near Penland Hall, with plans to resurface four lower tennis courts and create 11 dedicated pickleball courts.

The addition of more pickleball courts at Baylor is not just about providing a space for students to play; it’s about promoting physical and mental well-being. Kim Scott, Director of Campus Recreation, emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment for students to engage socially and physically, which ultimately contributes to their overall academic performance.

For many students like Austin Emery, pickleball has become an integral part of their college experience. It’s a place to meet new people, build friendships, and have fun. With the upcoming expansion of pickleball facilities at Baylor, the club is looking forward to hosting more tournaments and engaging with sponsors to further promote the sport on campus.

As the fall pickleball intramural season comes to an end, students can look forward to the co-rec pickleball season starting in mid-March after the new courts have been completed.
