Residents Provide Input on New Sports Courts in Proctor Park

The Town of Newmarket is buzzing with excitement as plans are underway to add one basketball court and two pickleball courts to Proctor Park. This decision comes after more than 460 residents weighed in on a survey to determine which sports courts should be added to the park.

During an online town hall event held on Oct. 17, residents voiced their opinions on what recreational facilities they would like to see in their community. The overwhelming response was in favor of pickleball, with 35% of survey respondents indicating their preference for this sport. Ward 4 Councillor Trevor Morrison expressed his excitement for the project, noting the high level of community engagement.

The addition of these sports courts aligns with Newmarket’s recreation playbook, which aims to expand recreational offerings and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to access sports facilities. The new courts will be located near the Proctor Park playground, allowing parents to easily supervise their children while enjoying a game of basketball or pickleball.

Capital works project manager Danyal Sakrani shared that the project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025. The design of the courts will include open benches for spectators and the relocation of trees to accommodate the new facilities. Despite some concerns raised by residents about noise and parking, the town is committed to addressing these issues and incorporating feedback into the final design.

Overall, the addition of these sports courts reflects Newmarket’s commitment to providing accessible and diverse recreational opportunities for its residents. With construction set to begin soon, the community can look forward to enjoying these new facilities in the near future. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
