Upcoming Events and News in Volusia County: Tony Tussing, Pickleball Tournament, Kids Day, Boys & Girls Clubs, School Updates, and Stetson University Athletics
Are you a pickleball enthusiast looking for a fun and competitive tournament to participate in? Look no further than the inaugural Stetson Women’s Basketball Tournament, hosted by the Stetson University women’s basketball team and head coach Lynn Bria. This exciting event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Pictona in Holly Hill.
Players of all skill levels are invited to join in on the action, with medals being awarded to the top finishers. Not only will you have the opportunity to showcase your pickleball skills, but you’ll also get the chance to meet the Stetson women’s basketball players and staff. This tournament is set to become an annual event, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to be a part of the inaugural competition.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with tournament play kicking off at 9 a.m. The goal is to wrap up the tournament by noon, so you can enjoy a morning of friendly competition and camaraderie. Best of all, all proceeds from the event will directly support the Stetson women’s basketball student-athlete experience.
But that’s not all that’s happening in the local community. The Young Lives Foundation is hosting a Kids Day in conjunction with Cassadaga’s haunted attraction, featuring trick-or-treating with unmasked monsters, a bounce house, petting zoo, face painting, and more. This event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 27, from noon to 4 p.m., with a $5 cash entry fee per child, with all proceeds benefiting Haunters for Autism Awareness.
In other news, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties has announced Mack Reid as the new interim CEO, bringing 25 years of experience with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida. One of their upcoming events is “A Swing for Success” at the LPGA Golf Course on Monday, Nov. 18.
Local schools are also getting in on the action, with DeBary Elementary School hosting its second annual Trunk or Treat event on Wednesday, Oct. 30, and Starke Elementary School holding its School Advisory Council and PTA meetings on Thursday, Oct. 31. Heritage Middle School will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from Nov. 4-8, and West Volusia high-school football games are back on schedule after being postponed due to Hurricane Milton.
And don’t forget about the exciting sports events happening at Stetson University. Homecoming festivities are taking place from Oct. 24-27, with the Hatter football team facing off against Presbyterian on Saturday, Oct. 26. The men’s and women’s soccer teams have been putting in strong performances, and the volleyball team is gearing up for upcoming matches.
