City Council Considers Limiting Pickleball Hours at Sonnenberg Park

Are you a fan of pickleball? If so, you’re not alone! This fast-growing game has taken the nation by storm, and Canandaigua is no exception. With all eight courts at Sonnenberg Park converted from tennis to pickleball, players have been flocking to the courts to enjoy this fun and exciting sport.

However, not everyone is thrilled about the noise that pickleball games can produce. The sharp clicking noise of the plastic ball being volleyed back and forth by wooden paddles has raised concerns among residents living near the courts. City Councilor Michael Mills has taken these concerns to the Environmental Committee, which will be meeting soon to discuss potentially limiting pickleball playing hours at Sonnenberg Park.

In addition to noise concerns, residents have also raised issues about parking, with some players even resorting to using their car headlights to illuminate the courts after sunset. These issues will all be addressed at the upcoming committee meeting, with potential solutions being brought before the full Council for consideration.

But pickleball isn’t the only topic on the agenda for the upcoming meetings. The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council will be providing an update on storm-water management improvements along Sucker Brook, which experienced serious flooding last year. Additionally, the installation of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in several city parks will be discussed, in compliance with new state legislation requiring AED access at all practices and games for camps and youth sports programs.

The Ordinance Committee will also be meeting to address important issues, such as the removal of old utility poles that have been replaced with new ones, creating a “double wood” situation. Another potential local law under consideration is one that would allow the city to inspect properties suspected of unlicensed cannabis sales and activities, and take enforcement actions as needed.

With so many important topics on the agenda, the upcoming Council meetings are sure to be packed with discussions and decisions that will impact the Canandaigua community. Stay tuned for updates on these issues and more as the Council works to address the concerns and needs of its residents.
