Helper City Council Meeting Recap: Budget Changes, Event Approvals, and Future Plans
The Helper City Council recently held a quick meeting to discuss budget changes and other important agenda items. The meeting was attended by all council members, with councilman Cole Stapley joining via Zoom.
One of the key topics discussed was a request from the United Way of Eastern Utah to waive rental fees for their upcoming “Help Me Grow” event at the Helper Auditorium. This family-friendly event aims to provide parents with resources and activities to engage with their children. The council approved the waiver of all rental fees for the event, showing their support for community initiatives.
Another important agenda item was the approval of a road closure on Main Street for the upcoming First Friday event on August 2. This event, hosted by Kilpatrick Art Garage and Utah Power Credit Union, will raise funds to rehabilitate the Castle Gate cemetery. The council approved the road closure to support this meaningful cause and promote community involvement.
Mayor Lenise Peterman expressed concern about the negative balance in the 2023-24 budget and sought clarification from Helper City Recorder Zack Tonc. Tonc explained that the budget currently lacks four months of sales tax, which will be backdated once received in September. This transparency in budget discussions highlights the council’s commitment to financial responsibility.
Council members also provided updates on various projects, including the delivery of new pickleball nets and plans to re-cement the basketball court in memory of Tom Williams. The Helper Project will also be purchasing new umbrellas for Main Street and the Helper City Pool, enhancing community spaces for residents to enjoy.
Councilman Stapley shared exciting news about extending the Helper City Pool’s hours by hiring staff as young as 15. This decision will benefit the community by providing more opportunities for recreational activities during the summer months.
As the meeting concluded, Mayor Peterman announced a closed session for further discussions, demonstrating the council’s dedication to addressing important matters in a thorough and efficient manner. The collaborative efforts of the Helper City Council reflect a commitment to serving the community and fostering positive growth and development.
