Pickleball Enthusiast Patrick Johnson Promotes Sport’s Growth in Puget Sound Region

Pickleball is taking the Puget Sound region by storm, and Edmonds resident Patrick Johnson is at the forefront of the movement. With a passion for the sport that dates back to his childhood, Johnson is not only an avid player but also an ambassador for USA Pickleball, working tirelessly to promote and grow the game.

After rediscovering his love for pickleball about a decade ago, Johnson has dedicated himself to spreading the joy of the sport to others. He advocates for more courts to be built or converted from underused tennis courts, organizes events and tournaments, and shares his enthusiasm with anyone willing to listen.

One of Johnson’s most significant contributions to the pickleball community is the Seattle Metro Classic, a tournament he co-founded with his wife Marianne and a couple of friends. What started with 50 entries in 2018 has now grown to over 900 competitors, making it the largest tournament of its kind on the West Coast. The event, scheduled for July 30 through Aug. 4 in Shoreline, is a labor of love for Johnson and his team of volunteers.

Despite the tournament’s success, Johnson remains humble, emphasizing that they are just a group of pickleball enthusiasts who want to give back to the sport they love. Their dedication has paid off, with the Seattle Metro Classic attracting players from all over and garnering significant interest within the community.

For Johnson, pickleball is more than just a game; it’s a way of life. He envisions a future where pickleball is integrated into school curriculums, becomes a competitive sport at all levels, and even makes its way to the Olympic Games. With his unwavering passion and advocacy, Johnson is determined to see the sport continue to grow and thrive.

If you’re interested in experiencing the excitement of pickleball firsthand, don’t miss the Seattle Metro Classic Pickleball Tournament at Shoreview Park in Shoreline. With matches running from July 30 to Aug. 4, this event promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent and camaraderie. For more information, visit www.seattlemetropickleball.com.
