The Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego is getting a major upgrade with the opening of a new active recreation space next week. This new space, located in the northeast corner of the park, features a variety of amenities that are sure to appeal to visitors of all ages.
Some of the new amenities at the Waterfront Park include two pickleball courts, a basketball court, a five-station fitness apparatus, a fenced off-leash dog park, drinking fountains with pet bowls, table tennis, shaded seating/benches, site lighting, and accessible pathways. Additionally, a half-acre garden area will be planted with new trees and plants to enhance the beauty of the park.
The grand opening of the new recreation space is set for Monday, July 22 at 11:30 a.m. Officials from the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, along with Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer, will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. After the presentation, the public is invited to participate in a free pickleball workshop and basketball games on the new courts.
The project to create these new amenities at Waterfront Park began in the fall of 2023, with public meetings held to gather feedback from residents and park users. The result is a final concept plan that includes free-to-use amenities that are open to all ages.
